Modest is Beautiful!

Last summer I spoke to the teen girls at our annual Youth Conference here in Ukraine on the topic "Modest is Beautiful." I wanted these young ladies to realize that they are NOT sacrificing anything to dress in a way that pleases God. You CAN be modest AND beautiful at the same time, and I wanted us to have fun while we thought about that... which is why I spent several hours preparing a little "model presentation" for the girls to watch. I found the pictures I used online by using my search engine, typing in words such as "modest, dress, long skirts, etc..." Unfortunately, I cannot remember all of the websites I copied pictures from, but you are welcome to do a search yourself. There are some great sites out there selling beautiful clothing and talking about the importance of modesty.

The topic of modesty usually seems to be a negative topic. With this video presentation, I had the goal of presenting it as something positive. I hope you feel that way when you see it!

As I prepared the video, I had a couple of things in mind that I was looking for (other than, of course, modest clothing). Because my group of listeners were teens, I was careful to only choose young models. I also wanted to include all types of dress (from casual to church, banquet to wedding) and many different styles and colors to appeal to a variety of tastes.

Of course, since we are missionaries in Ukraine, the presentation was prepared in Russian. The last song you will hear is only in Russian as far as I know, but the song is just beautiful and the message was right on target for what I was looking for... "How Great You Are." God is great and worthy of everything... including our decisions on how we dress!

And, here is a translation of the verses in the video:

Modest is Beautiful!

Proverbs 31:10 - Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.

Proverbs 31:25 - Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come.

Proverbs 31:22 - She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple.

Job 29:14 - I put on righteousness, and it clothed me: my judgment was as a robe and a diadem.

I Timothy 2:9 - In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;

Psalm 45:11 - So shall the king greatly desire thy beauty: for he is thy Lord; and worship thou him.

Deuteronomy 7:6 - For thou art an holy people unto the Lord thy God: the Lord thy God hath chosen thee to be a special people unto himself, above all people that are upon the face of the earth.

I Timothy 4:12 - Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.

I Corinthians 6:19-20 - What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.

Romans 6:13 - Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God; as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.

Ephesians 5:15-17 - See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, Redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.

I Peter 2:9 - But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:

I Peter 1:16 - Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.

  1. Great job, Jolene. This is such an important subject with our youth and even ladies. There ought to be a difference in the way a Christian lady dresses from the way the world dresses. Why do people think you can't be beautiful/pretty AND modest? I agree...MODEST IS BEAUTIFUL! Great post!

You are doing a fine job, Jolene, as well as being beautifully modest
yourself...which speaks volumes to those young girls you were teaching,
too! What a wonderfully, sweet young woman you are! I'm so glad to be
able to call you my friend...

    Hugs to you,
    Felicia :)

  4. How has the church gotten so far from modesty? I think that our american culture has moved so far from true modesty that we need to look back a bit to discover modesty. Sometimes, a dress even a long dress can be so flattering that it is immodest too. Oh, and how about 1 Cor. 11?

  5. Thank you for sharing that with us. I would love to do a women's ministry on modesty in our church. We surely do need it.

Thank you for the new blog David. Larry has been enjoying them with me and is going to write soon.
    Love to all,
    Vicki

  6. I have a question does this mean they should wear a dress or skirt all the time, even when working out? or is that an exception, and also if they play a school sport with a uniform?

  7. Hi "dancerlol43"! I personally have made a commitment to the Lord to dress for Him at ALL times, so if I cannot do something modestly, I do not do it at all. My only exception to this is when I am by myself or with my husband.

When we teach our young ladies, we encourage them to think this through... It is not true modesty when we dress one way at church and then another way, say... at the beach. We have to keep in mind WHO it is for, and then all other things fall into place. I hope this explanation helps!
